wtc future
Pat posted a comment to a recent post where he described an interesting, but unconsidered, design for the renewed World Trade Center space..
“I don’t know how to post a new topic on your site, but everyone should check-out www.sydmead.com and look at his WTC design proposal (obviously it was not chosen).
For those of you who don’t know who syd mead is, he’s the guy who painted all those cool futuristic paintings back in the late 60’s that made the future actually look interesting. He was also the visual stylist for all the cool stuff in “Blade runner”.
This design is pretty big, but it sort of says “OK, I dare you to ram a plane into me…see if I care”.
Take note, Mr Mead does not use 3D modeling software. He paints everything with gouache on illustration board. The other proposals don’t even compare in looks.”
Well, I don’t know if I agree that it screams, “OK, I dare you to ram a plane into me…see if I care,” but I do like the design.
For comparison, we should refer to the LMDC site, renewnyc.com, to review the designs that are in the running. I am not positive, but I think it is now actually down to 2 designs, the one from THINK Design and the one from either Studio Daniel Libeskind or United Architects.
I am partial to the Libeskind design.

I think mead’s design is funky - reminds me of superman’s fortress of solitude. I actually liked foster and partners. It felt like an updated version of the towers. It is two buildings although looking at it at different angles it looks like one. The one key thing is it restored the skyline which I think is very important. THINK’s and Libeskind’s design are the two finalist and I like those two as well. I saw all the designs downtown - it was cool - if you go - go early.
