starbucks nerd

Maybe it’s just me, but this nerd seems to be taking advantage of the internet service thing at Starbucks. I took these pictures tonight of this guy who appears to have lugged his whole computer system into the Starbucks on 41st and Madison. I don’t see any coffee anywhere either…

Classic… I wonder if he’s playing global thermo nuclear war with Joshua?!

HILARIOUS – pays to have your camera on you at all times in this City, you just never know what strange and bizarre things you will find….in a Starbucks no less. You should submit this to Starbucks Corp.!

i’m SO glad you documented this guy on your blog. he’s been there everyday, ALL DAY, for the last week and a half. i’m sure it won’t be long before he’s on dave letterman or something. i just want to know – what’s his story? if he’s doing it as a performance art thing – brilliant. if he’s working on his resume – dorkwad…

People that lug an entire desktop including a clunky cathode ray tube monitor into a Starbucks should be culled out of the human herd. It’s guys like that who will ruin this whole free wi-fi thing for the rest of us.

  5. Ryan said something

I’m mainly surprised that Starbucks let him plug the thing into the wall.

  6. StephanieKlein said something

I am going to interview him right now. I will buy him coffee and bring the ipod thing you gave me.

  7. h.sidney said something

i passed that. and thought there had to be some kind of logical explanation for that. like: maybe he works there and doesnt lug it around.

    nerd report – 3/31/05
    9:18 am.
nerd asleep with hood pulled over head in front of cpu – addition of dual monitors and laptop noted (must have upgraded) in northwest corner of starbucks, facing south.

i think its a publicity stunt “Dorks and greeks are also welcome here”

OH MY GOSH.. too funny!!! I work one day out of the week at Borders – utilizing T-mobile. But its costly, as I feel the need to buy a drink every hour. But this is just hilarious!

Okay, seriously, is this a joke, being that it’s April 1st and all? Don’t make me have to drive up to NYC from Maryland just to see for myself.

    nerd report – 4/1/05
    10:03 am
nerd cpu is pulled apart – most parts are on a starbucks table with a man that seems to be with nerd today – a dreadlocked black nerd (possibly tech support?) on a laptop that looks patched into nerd workstation. nerd seems to have on same sweater (blue and black pullover hoodie) black nerd seemed to be preoccupied with possible tech support duties – first nerd seemed very active, moving a monitor – looked anxious.

  13. murphy said something

black nerd seated in southwest corner facing west. first nerd location variable.

  14. Tom said something

It’s no joke. He’s been there for at least a week (often sleeping at his table). One of my co-workers has been taking daily pictures of the dude.

I’m starting to think there’s a hidden camera involved somewhere here. I’m speculating… but maybe this is part of some TV program gag to see how far they could push this guy’s welcome? Either way, this is pretty funny.

My roommate met this man sometime last week as he was pushing a shopping cart filled with his HUGE computer pieces down fifth avenue. Apparently that is his mode of transportation for them. He claims that free AOL cds make his computer wireless… And that he is using the internet for online dating. Apparently he is turning 21 shortly and is looking for someone to spend his birthday with. I think this is all legitimate folks…. the man is just a bit wacked.

  19. matt said something

He is brilliant!!!! I hated to see the introduction of the flat screen. I favored the retro-large-monitor.

He does seem the type though pull out an automatic weapon and mow down everyone on the corner.

    Awesome!
I know some nerds like that.

If Starbucks told him he couldn’t plug it in, I wonder if he could sue for technological age/obesity(?) discrimination :p

  27. bux_n_ATL said something

if he’s been there for over a week or so, using that Desktop….I wonder how much the Power bill is now this month, compared to previous months…….your not buyin’ coffee……your probably using the NEW DAY-Trial CD offers from T-mobile..(using a different CD each day…), and your takin’ up space…………dammnit, YOUR GONNA PAY FOR SOME OF THESE BILLS…….

Well, maybe he’s cut a deal with the owner? I hope so! I like the idea of a lap-top or notebook better in these situations, but oh well! yeah dittoes on the flat screen!

WOw this a first I never saw anything like this before( and trust me I have seen a lot of things in my carrer.)
This is just to show you some of the things that we have to put up with all the time. There are a lot of homeless people on the beach…(South Beach that is anyway!!!) and a lot of times they camoe in to try and get free stuff, and when we refuse the curse and trow things at us. One time a prostitute spitted on one of my co-worker( disgusting).

  48. homeless with a laptop said something

Being homeless as well as a computer addict I know how this guy must feel, but I draw the line at having to lug around a older desktop. The closest I came to that was when I Dell bit the dust and a friend gave me a Gateway Profile 3 all in one(I hate gateways!!!!!!) I know have an irritating but usable Toshiba 2100CDS its only 400mhz but it works.
