Napoleon’s Liger

I just finished watching Napoleon Dynamite for the 4th time. I fricken love that movie, gosh. There are so many memorable quotes from that movie I can’t even remember them all.

Deb: What are you drawing?
Napoleon Dynamite: A liger.
Deb: What’s a liger?
Napoleon Dynamite: It’s pretty much my favorite animal. It’s like a lion and a tiger mixed… bred for its skills in magic.

I remembered after seeing this scene again, that April’s Maxim has some photos of a real Liger. I always thought a Liger was a fantasy animal, like a unicorn, or a dragon, but it turns out it’s totally real, and totally the largest cat on the planet. It’s a mix of 50% tiger, 50% lion, and it is ENORMOUS. But I have just learned that it’s very specifically the result of breeding a female Tiger to a male Lion. The rarer animal, the result of the opposite, breeding a male Tiger to a female Lion, is called a Tigon! Amazing.

But wait, there’s even more Dynamite news! A , from McFarlane and Twentieth Century Fox! How sick is that!? I pray that there is a Liger…

Nope, not kidding. Totally real. When the mother is a Tiger, the result is an offspring animal that is missing a growth inhibitor that would have come from the male tiger. Since the father is a lion, that gene is not present in the male lion, or if it is, it’s somehow not the exact thing.

These are two cats and very close on the family tree. Hell, you could breed a bull mastif and a chiauau…you’d have to use some kind of lubricant, but you could. :-p
