laguna beach, the real oc

I have a couple of confessions to make. I have made it a habit to make a fool of myself on the website time and time again, so right now should not be unexpected.

Confession #1: I LIKE reality TV. Ever since I first saw Cops, The Real World, and America’s Funniest Home Videos, I have had a more-than-healthy affinity for watching people make fools of themselves, hurt themselves, and otherwise suffer for my entertainment.

Confession #2: For whatever reason, good realtiy TV is very compelling, but BAD reality TV is even better. By A LOT.

Confession #3: I think I am younger than I am. The way I talk, walk, act, dress, drink, write… everything. I’m like Peter Pan, only NOT a pedophile.

Confession #4: I TiVo The Real World, The Surreal Life, 30 Days, Hogan Knows Best, Beauty and the Geek.

Confession #5: I refuse to tape Laguna Beach, even though I totally LOVE it. I mean, I can’t stop watching it. But there’s a problem, and it is both Confession #6 and the whole point of this post.

Confession #6: I am too old, too uncool, and too retarded to understand what the fuck “Laguna Beach, the Real Orange County” is. That’s right. I have no idea what the show is. On the surface, it’s reality TV about a bunch of super-rich, super-good-looking, teenagers living their drama filled lives in one of the most beautiful places on the US mainland. EXCEPT, there are too many cameras, too many angles, too much drama for it to be a reality TV show. But the kids are DEFINITELY real, because NOBODY can act that real. I am so confused every time I watch it. I am confused now, just talking about it.

So here is my public plea. Can somebody, anybody, maybe one of you younger readers, please fucking explain this show to me? How do they make it? Are those kids actors? Is there a script? How is it filmed? Anything… any information would be better than my current mix of infatuation and confusion. Please, help me be cool!!!

I live just up the coast in Newport beach, and I’m pretty sure the cast is made up of last years graduating class of Laguna Beach High. The kids are real, and I’m sure it’s had a little drama injection to keep it extremely interesting. But when you live in a place where most everyone is attractive and have lots of money, drama is a mainstay.

Yes! Some other regular person who doesn’t understand what the deal is with The O.C.!!

Well…to shed a little light on it…there are 4 writers listed in the credits at the end of the show last time I saw it. I watched because I was wondering the same thing. What does that tell you?

    Chris,

Everything on TV is scripted, manipulated, staged or modified. And I do mean everything. Even David Letterman is working from a script. Even the reality shows do re-takes so they can get a new camera angle.

So they take some real (cast) people, sort of make it about their lives, and then sculpt the situations to make for better TV.

funny you should ask - cause all of us over at WB records (where 95% of the employees act, dress & talk MUCH younger than they actually are) have pondered this Laguna Beach mystery as well. Being in LA you can ALWAYS find a friend of a friend who writes, acts, or produces any given show that you want info on. such is the case with this show - here’s the scoop: the students are not real students, casting agents scouted out malls in the OC area looking for hot young beautiful creatures. most of these kids aren’t even in highshool - they have rough story lines to follow (hence the need for writers) and most of them didn’t know eachother - prior to the show - they’re not actors, rather, real people in staged scenarios…now pass it along

I had the best time of my life when I vistited my friend Cynthia in Laguna over the 4th of July weekend. I met the most awesome girl named D***. And Cynthia lives just down the street from the High School.

This doesn’t have anything to do with the show, but I got laid.

I don’t really have a point other than that.

    So. Uh. How you doin’?

My friend obsesses over it, and she’s like “It’s totally real life!” but I don’t know. I saw an episode where all the girls were hanging out, and they were talking about security systems. Its seems too planed out that at that very moment the guys were playing a prank on the girls by dressing in all black and pretending to break in.

well idk.. im obsessing over the show right now..part of me believes its fake even though i dont want to believe that.. but yehh there was a episode where all the girls were around a table talking about security systems cuz the girl who owns the house, n since theyre totally rich down there they have gates to their houses or somethin like that and she was on the phone with her dad n apparently the alarm went off cuz those guys snuck in to do the prank and i guess the alarm goes off by accident sometimes so thats what got the conversasion going cuz the girl told her father yeh this keeps happening to us, we need a new alarm system n the guys are outside doing the prank.. that clears up that but idk i dont really care if the show is fake actually.. that show the OC is fake n most girls are obsessed about that but seriously i havent seen a episode of it in my life and i dont plan to..it looks boring..i kno someone said most of the people didnt even kno each other before the show started.. i think they all knew each other.. thats how the drama started like lauren didnt like kristen..all that.. but i know no one can act that well.. they did all know eachother and i bought the box set and on the deleted footage they had interviews from all the people in the show and mtv came to their school and they said if their teachers let them leave class they would go down and get interviewed for the show and if they were liked they would get a call bak.. and everyone said that.. i think that if the cameras are around and someone says something important and the cameras didnt get it or didnt get it loud enough they might make them repeat it but i think thats about it.. and yes i did see 4 writers on the credits but mainly what they do is in the beginning it says previously on laguna beach…they write that, and what the narrator, “kristen” says in the beginning..theres no script.. its tru that laguna beach is such a small place so basically everybody knows everybody’s business so thats what causes drama..idk idont think its fake at all but everyone has their own opinion

    you’re fucking retarded….

Laguna beach is for airheaded highschool chicks who cant think intelligently and are brainwashed by mtv to think that the only things that matter in life are popularity and looks. Fuck stupidass highschool chicks and fuck laguna beach

  13. Coming down to Reality said something

Ok. I find myself a 25 year old, still loving much of the stuff that I did when I was 20. However, this Laguna Beach is absolutey ridiculous. In fact, the only reason I’m on this site is because I happened to breeze by it on tv and want to type in “is laguna beach real” on fucking google. If this crap is real, then I feel terribley sorry for our countrys future. Yes, I am from the East coast, and maybe our ideas are a little different. I guess all i have to really say is “Act like these people……FUCK THAT!”

    it’s a scripted reality
    ’nuff said

the cast memebers ARE friends, they were not all picked from different locations throughout the OC as Katlean says… if you google their names, you will see their high school pics from when they were freshman etc…. even the teens on the show have said that it IS a reality, but since the camera are only there from Thursday-Sunday, the crew will ask the kids to re-enact something if something important had happened that week.

[…] While I am on a rant here, let me continue by saying MTV is useless. At 15 seconds to midnight I turned it on to catch the ball drop, which was a total waste of time. They didn’t have a camera on the ball. Instead they focused in on Stephen from Laguna Beach (reality or soap opera?) and some ugly VJ hugging. Then they had two nobody bands butcher a cover of an old Cars’ song, right before I changed the channel. […]

I live in Laguna Beach and go to the high school. The show is technically “real” as the kids did actually go to LBHS, they were friends(”kinda”), and the show is unscripted. And by unscripted I mean that there is no actual script, its just the producers put them in locations and tell them what to talk about, and they make it up. Its not that exiting, I’ve seen 3 episodes and I don’t want to see any more.
