The Outsiders

Okay Chris, I’ll give it a go.

I spend alot of time alone working from home. I fancy myself a bit of a loner, plugging away in this little studio on Crescent Street. But even a loner gets lonely sometimes. To keep myself company and to keep in touch with the planet, I listen to alot of public radio. A whole lot. Brian Lehrer and Lenard Lopate keep me company while I work away. News and Notes, BBC World Service, All Things Considered…I make believe it all keeps me in tune with local and world news. (Probably I should pay more attention to Marketplace) On the weekends I listen to Prairie Home Companion with Gary Whatshisfacesofunny. Selected Shorts- so good. Fresh Air with Terry Gross, sometimes annoying but I still listen. I even made up a song about Seterious Johnson. I can’t tell the whole thing but it starts off, “Seterious… you’re handsome and mysterious… Seterious”.

Anyway, I also like to read. I recently reread The Outsiders and I’ve been trying like hell to stay gold since. Kind of difficult when all I seem to do is work and listen to public radio but still I try. The best selling young adult book of all time, The Outsiders is required reading for most kids in grade school. I don’t think I had read it since fifth grade. If you have never read this great story read it right away. If you have already, read it again; it will strike a different chord this time. I Promise.

Coincidentally, Leonard Lopate did an interview with S.E Hinton, author of The Outsiders, this week. (That’s the universe giving me secret messages again.) Amazingly, she was only 16 years old when she wrote that book in 1967. In 1983 Francis Ford Coppola made film adaptation of the story and later this month it will be rereleased on DVD including about 20 minutes of previously unreleased scenes. You can hear the whole interview here. I suck at using computers so I’m not sure if you can just click onto it here or if you have to type it in.

I probably listen to as much NPR/WNYC as you do. I’m totally addicted to This American Life. You can listen to almost all of the past shows in the archive on http://www.thisamericanlife.com. So, so good.
