iPod video arrived!!
The iPod video arrived today!!!. It shipped yesterday, but it’s here today. Holy sweet Fed Ex.
I took a bunch of pictures of the opening and unveiling and put them up on a flickr set.
I only had my crappy pocket camera, so the picts aren’t that great. Also, unfortunately, I don’t sync my iPod at work, so I have to wait to get home to put any content on the thing. Maybe I can work something out here, not sure…
Here are my thoughts. I’m completely underwhelmed by the packaging and included accessories. It is clear that Apple had to find a place to cut corners, and they did it in packaging and accessories. Everything is white, of course, except for the iPod, which looks like the beautiful bastard stepchild of the PSP and 4th gen Ipod. It is really, really nice, and really, really thin. Probably 25% thinner than my 3rd gen 30GB model. Except it’s 60GB, and it plays video.
Apple missed an opportunity by not preloading some video content. A Shakira video or something to instantly test out the screen would have been great, and a nice way to offset the accessories bundle. They might have made some promotional money from Sony Music, and been able to include a charger, or a real sleeve/case, or something resembling the fit and finish of their normal packaging.
The shitty sleeve/case is inexcusable. Why did they even bother? It probbaly cost about 10 cents, and doesn’t even fit right.
OK, that’s it. Go look at the photos and tell your friends.

I’m so far behind the iPod curve that it’s like you all have membership to this great club where you speak an insanely catchy-but-incomprehensible language that I’ll never be able to learn.
I feel like David Ogden Stiers in Better Off Dead. You’re really bringing me over, Lane.
Like any new gadget made by Apple, I’m definitely keen on this new video iPod. But while the packaging and the iPod itself look slick, I’m still not sold on how practical it will be to view a favorite show or film on such a small screen.
How about some photos with VIDEO
I would be interested to know if you can save a dvd movie onto it and play it back. If so, what file format does it use?
Any clues on whether the high-quality stereo recording settings work?

Any details on bit depth (different from sample rate) and what format it records to? Eg: can it do 44.1, 16bit, WAVs? I’m not sure if this is something you could figure out without a Belkin or Griffin add-on (none of which exist for G5 iPods yet).
Apple Article
You could use Handbrake to “rip” a dvd to 480 rez mpeg-4 and take it with . . .
i have a question,
is ipod video in the apple stores USA now?
or i only can buy it by internet?
You can put your DVD movies on the iPod. If they ripped with the playback specs for the iPod. I put Constantine on mine. Mp4 format using a program called Handbreak. Just rip, and to iTunes and add to iPod.
I just bought the new Ipod, but I just bought the 20gb iPod Color when it released two months ago. I would really like to trade my 20gb Color iPod for a Nano if anyone is interested. email me. My iPod is in great shape. I’ve had clickshields and and Agent 18 case on it since day one.
that thing is just a distraction..they knew the numbers would be short so they threw together this thing in order to smoke screen the lag in sales…the REAL player is coming in 06. that will be something worth buying.
I was COMPLETELY underwhelmed by my Ipod Mini. I’m not giving Apple any more hard earned cash for anything until I hear REALLY great things and I’m not hearing it here with this.
Why are you such a baby about the packaging? “Shitty”? What are you comparing it to? The crappy crappy boxes all other MP3 players come in? Give me a break; if you’re going to things that many people see you might as well think about them first.
Sorry I was not clear. The “shitty” packaging is compared to the stunning previous versions. This is my third iPod, and it is by far sold in the worst packaging. Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple, and I love this iPod, but it is very, very clear that Apple had to cut some corners in the “extras” to keep the price at $399.
chris, that shity ‘case’ you are talking about is it clear? can you share a photo of that thing on the ipod
I too have the 3rd gen iPod and the packaging was a lot better - certainly gave me an ‘apple-gasm’ when I opened the box - however it’s just taking up space in a closet now. I think the new packaging is far more practical.
Does it have any built-in functionality for recording? Such as plugging a mic into the headphone jack? Does the manual say anything at all about the audio recording capabilities?
What I said earlier? Triple it.
Am I the only one who thinks that new screen is just a little too big? Compared to your old iPod the proportions seem all wrong, which is a real pity because I love the new finish. Oh well, I guess it’s a case of function over design.
Oh, and considering how the nano gets scratched so quick, I would get some sort case for that real soon.
Does it come with Apple stickers?
the packing is pretty much identical to the nano packaging which is quite strange as this is there premium iPod. As packaging goes its still quite nice, has apple shot themselves in the foot by setting such a high standard for pack design in the past?
You all must be poor, broke bastards whining about money and packaging.
Get a job! Life’s about more than money and boxes.
Tempting but I’m not going near one until there are some third party cases for it. I went from a 3G ipod to a 5G and the slimmer size meant it got all scratched up inside its own case.
How’s the battery life, Chris?
Size is one thing. Production value is another. While the new iPod comes in a smaller box with less inside, the package is on of Apple’s most upscale to date, sporting full color photography of the iPod on an embossed (raised) area, plus a chrome foil stamp. All on a matte black background. There is nothing cheap about the box.
Can you help me,where I can find the “Handbreak” please?
ariant, google “Handbrake”
My video ipod arrives tomorrow Yeah! I could care less about the packaging, I throw that stuff away anyway. I spent the day loading iTunes with videos I have already on dvds. Handbrake works but it is slow, it takes 10 minutes to put one video on but iTunes downloads aren’t exactly snappy either.
Yep mine came yesterday and I’m well impressed with it. Busy putting a few DVD’s that I own on there and hopefully Apple will be quick to get full length movies onto the music store quickly. Its a bit more of a chore ripping and although I have a dual G5 i’d rather pay for them tha go through the rigmorole. Besides most of my DVD’s are widescreen and you can’t take advantage of the full 320X240 screen.
Anybody know how to get rid of the subtitles when using “handbrake” to rip original DVD’s?
Hey, I got my iPod video too and it is awesome! I rip DVDs with handbrake (no subtitle errors tho) and then I just put em on the iPod. Or I get episodes from Bittorent and then convert them in video2Go (which is also free like handbrake).
With regards to ripping movies without subtitles. Use mactheripper to extract the movie only. The using handbrake on the subtitle box select none. I have a question my self if some one could answer it please. My ipod has not arrived yet. I have been using hand brake with the following settings. Codec=AVC/H.264/AAC Audio. Encoder=X264 Average bitrate=768 Sample rate(audio)=48000 biterate 128 picture setting 320×240. Does this work in practice. Loads of people speculate that this is the correct settings but I need to know that Handbrake is producing working movies. I would appreciate a confirmation or not.
Useful video converter for iPod Video
It can convert almost all video format, e.g. DivX, XviD, MOV, RM, rmvb, MPEG, VOB, DVD, WMV, AVI to iPod Movie / iPod Video format.

Okay. I also have an Ipod Video…. and yes it is great. When I convert videos to the iPod Movie/ iPod Video format, it has no sound. Is it meant to do this? If it is then that sucks. Answers to my question would be gr8ly appreciated!
