tab x

Almost a year ago, I switched completely to Firefox for all my web browsing needs. There was a time when I used Safari on OS X and Firefox on PC, but I like Firefox so much, especially the new G4 optimized 1.5, that I have switched completely. Both Safari and Firefox offer tabbed browsing, which I can no longer live without. When I am running IE, even for testing, I can’t stand the new windows for even a second. One feature I miss in Firefox from Safari though was the “x” close buttons on each tab. I think the single close button is asinine.

Today at work I was thinking about it and decided that this would be the first Firefox extension I designed and built. I gave myself 24 working hours to research, design, and program the extension. Of course, I checked the extensions database to make sure one didn’t already exist.

Well, of course it did, and I no longer have an extension to build, thanks to Stephen Clavering and Tab X. A tiny, simple install, like most Firefox extensions, Tab X removes the “x” close button from the right side of the tab bar, and adds one to each individual tab. just like Safari. I couldn’t be happier with this.

Tabx

Speaking of great extensions, this new one for del.icio.us is utterly brilliant, finally integrating del.icio.us bookmarks the way they should have been all along.

Hey, Chris, I thought of an extension you can write. I too have switched, full time, to Firefox from Safari. However, I really miss the integrated spellchecker. With Safari you could right-click in any text box and turn on OS X’s integrated spellchecking. Firefox doesn’t seem to have implemented that. There is a Spell Checker plug-in, but it’s a kludge compared to the integrated one in OS X.

This feature is useful only if you have like 5-10 tabs open in one window. Sometimes I wind up with 20 open tabs which makes it very hard to close each one. Can you revise this version so there’s an x on the tab AND on the right side, or is that overkill?

Don’t know about Mac but middle button click on the tab works mighty well to close it!

You can just middle mouse click the tab to close them. But then again that only works if you have a real mouse with more than 1 button. Stupid macs ;)

What skin are you using there? It looks cool. Or is that just how FireFox looks on Mac?

Wow. 2 comments about this theme. It is indeed the default OS X Firefox theme. Nothing special beyond the nice OS.

[…] I have really been getting into this Firefox thing. I’ve been using it for a while, but my recent discovery of Tab X opened up this new world of extensions to me. I have always known there were some useful ones out there, but I never really looked for anything for myself. Well, I have discovered some excellent ones which have vastly improved my browsing and developing over the last week or so. I thought I would share in case you don’t know these. (UPDATED 12/21) […]

I have found a theme that’s pretty darn close to the Mac OS X default theme:
    iFox Graphite
