firefox extensions

I have really been getting into this Firefox thing. I’ve been using it for a while, but my recent discovery of Tab X opened up this new world of extensions to me. I have always known there were some useful ones out there, but I never really looked for anything for myself. Well, I have discovered some excellent ones which have vastly improved my browsing and developing over the last week or so. I thought I would share in case you don’t know these. (UPDATED 12/21)

DeerPark
Technically this is not an extension, but I thought I should mention it. I am running the DeerPark version of Firefox 1.5, optimized and recompiled for G4 (Mac) processors by Neil Lee of beatnikpad.com.

Tab X
Simple, excellent addition of close buttons to each open tab. Just like Safari, so much better than one “x” in the corner.

Del.icio.us Extension
This new version of the extension integrates so well. Del.icio.us is now EXACTLY what I have always wanted in bookmarking. So good.

GMail Delete Button
Sweet extension adds a “delete” button right into the interface of GMail. The only mistake Google has made in recent history is excluding this button.

StumbleUpon
If you are feeling lucky, you click the button and it brings you to a great new website. I have really found some nice sites this way.

Clean cookies of this site
Long name for a simple little function. If you are developing or testing, deleting cookies on just one site can be very, very useful.

Web Developer
Unbelievable new extension that adds a huge array of development and debugging functions right to the browser. “Outline Bloc level elements” is my favorite.

DOM Inspector
Nice little inspector put out by the Mozilla folks. This can be very useful.

Spellbound
Very nice spellchecker extension that utilizes the open source spellchecking dictionaries that are part of the Mozilla effort. This allows you to spellcheck any text you enter into any open text field. So useful. (Hint: You have to install the extension and the dictionary.)

That’s about it for now. These are the only ones I am currently running. You need these, but please feel free to enlighten me about anything I have forgotten or don’t know about.

Funny thing about Tab X I actually hate that Safari doesn’t have the X in the corner. Why? Well, I hate having to move my mouse every time I would like to close a tab.

I absolutely have to have the BugMeNot extension…and if you have a second mouse button on your Mac (or PC) then All In One Gestures is lovely as well.

I discovered these two from Lifehacker yesterday..somewhat interesting although I don’t know how really useful they would be:
    Aardvark
    SearchStatus

lastly, I’ve found the SessionSaver extension to be pretty useful though it can be annoying at times too.

Just so you know, the Web Developer extension is not even remotely new. It’s been around pretty much forever. And yes, it is awesome… I wish it wasn’t so buried in their extensions site, because it is a must-have for anyone who makes web pages.

Question: What does the TabX extention do that using the middle mouse button to click the tab doesn’t?

  5. chris said something

Oh shit, necro, I had no idea that clicking the middle button did that. It works really well too. Well, I like the look of multiple “x”’s…
