wooden mirror
I am sure I posted this years ago, but I can’t seem to find the entry. I recently re-found the original website after talking about it with a friend. This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
Daniel Rozin’s mechanical “mirror” is made up of 830 small tiles of wood, each on its own actuator, connected to some kind of computer, with a small video camera in a hole in the center. The camera picks up the image and the computer converts it into grayscale images. The flat tiles are angled by the actuators in way that reflects different light values. You might notice the high spot lighting from above, which makes the shades of light much easier to achieve with small movements. In motion, the effect is simply mind-boggling. I LOVE the clack-clack-clack noises that accompany the video. I wish I thought of this.
It is Daniel Rozin’s project from way back in 1999 at ITP. He went on to create many other mechanical mirrors, such as this one made of “shiny balls”, along with a bunch of other outstanding work. I am in awe of this guy.

Hope the surgery went well Chris.

wow! that is impressive.
Amazing. Not sure I’d want to shave in front of it, but really impressive still.
