drastically speed up firefox

This video on metafilter shows users of IE and Firefox how to drastically speed up their browser if they are using a broadband connection. It looks like the default settings are optimized for dial-up and don’t take advantage of some of the capabilities of cable-modem or DSL. I followed the steps and instantly saw a massive improvement in performance. I HIGHLY recommend this.

To make it easier, I thought I would reproduce the steps for Firefox here, because watching the video and following along can be challenging. (I could care less about IE, so if you use it, you’ll have to watch the second half of the video.)

  • Type “about:config” in the address bar. Press ENTER.
  • In the Filter box, type “network”.
  • Scroll down to “network.http.pipelining”.
  • Double-click it and the value will change from FALSE to TRUE.
  • The line below should be “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and the default value is 4.
  • Double-click it and increase the value by typing in 10. (You can experiment with different values to see what gives you the best performance. Mine is currently 10.)
  • That’s it.

Now surf around. For me, performance was probably doubled for normal web browsing. This is really a fantastic tweak.

Hey - you can do this at the click of a button with the “FasterFox” extension for FireFox. It also gives you a neat timer to let you know how long each page takes to load.
