In 2001 a skinny, nerdy, curly haired white boy took the stage at a yearly dance event called Kollaboration. He followed a fairly averagely talented asian kid on stage who had a done a pretty good job of working the crowd. David Bernal nervously got started on his routine. He shuffled around a bit, pumped his fists at his chest like a white-boy, and the crowd kind of sighed. And then kicked it up a notch by doing what appears to be dislocating every joint in his body and completely turning the whole place upside down. The rest, as they say, is history. Here is the relatively internet famous clip of that performance, one of my all-time favorite things on the internets.
David Elsewhere, as he is now known, followed up with numerous incredible performances at subsequent Kollaboration event and other forums, many of which can be found on YouTube. Probably his most well-known work was having his head digitally replaced with Fred Astaire’s Gene Kelly’s in the VW Golf commercial remake of Singin’ in the Rain. Also on YouTube. He appeared on an iPod ad as a silhouette, and did a pretty well-known Heineken spot also (he might play the legs of everyone in this one, I’m not sure). He even has his own myspace page, and here is a pretty good interview.
Here’s the VW spot.
So, basically, he is a complete poplockin’ prodigy, AND he is way better than Poppin’ Hyun Joon.

I noticed you said, “one of my all-time favorite things on the internets” Where you taking a stab at good old George W? If so, awesome.
Amazing. But that’s Gene Kelly, not Fred Astaire.
Thanks. Fixed.
[…] While writing this post, I thought I would link back to another post I wrote about a brilliant “popper” called David Elsewhere. But, as has happened many times in the past, I can’ find the post, and I can’t believe I never wrote about it. Bizarre. Well, here deserves his own post, so I’ll write it now and link after. UPDATE: Here’s the new post on David Elsewhere. […]
[…] You Think You Can Dance. Absolutely phenomenal. I’d love to see a dance-off between him and the legend, David Elsewhere. I think Elsewhere is better overall, but nobody else has ever been this […]
