obama talks religion
As most of you know, I am both politically and religiously atheist. I don’t believe in god or the 2 party system, or in money that reads “In God We Trust.” And so I have vowed not to vote until the system is changed and the parties are gone and the country starts to have something to do with the people again.
So anyway, here is a bright moment in otherwise bleak political times. Here is Barack Obama speaking openly and sincerely about religion, secularism, and politics. As a semi-religious man, definitely moderate amongst most of the candidates we are used to, Barack has a really well-balanced and reasonable opinion of religion’s role in life and politics. This is surely the type of religious belief that this country needs and the type that I can certainly live with. I am rarely impressed. I am impressed.
I’ll also turn your attention to a post I made on 07/29/04 where I wrote in a bullet point list of Obama attributes, “Will be the first African-American President soon”… I stand by that.

Man, I hope Obama wins it all. Then the secularization of America can finally begin…
On the secularization front, this Hitchens vs. Boteach debate from last week is brilliant: http://tinyurl.com/38dh2x
I voted for Obama, and I hope like hell he gets elected, but I worry about what will happen when the GOP starts using the war on terr’r to scare all the dipshits into voting for McCain. Remember: as Romney says, a vote for the Democrats is a “surrender to terror.”
I watched that debate over the weekend. Hitchens’ first 15-minute argument against the existence of God is pure genius. I might not agree with Hitchens on everything (some of his opinions on the war are questionable) but for the most part the man is brilliant. Who else has balls big enough to call Mother Theresa a “douche-bag”?
As for the Rabbi, what an ignorant fool. I love it when Hitchens refers to him as “Big Boy.”
I dream about the day our society leaves this childish bullshit (i.e. religion) behind, but it’s going to take another 100 years or so.
This is a nation of believers and of non-believers, and all should be accepted and protected. And participate in our democracy, whether through service or protest. Thanks for posting this wonderful speech. Obama’s intelligence, fair mindedness and charisma is capturing the attention and hearts of many disaffected Americans. Hopefully enough to win him the Presidency.
Well said, Robin. However, I only accept believers if they keep their beliefs to themselves, i.e. no poisoning the minds of children in the classroom.
If Obama loses, I might actually weep like a little girl…
