update from Costa Rica, and photos

Everything is good here. I’ve been staying in a house right on the beach in Playa Guapile, about 6km north of Dominical. A friend of friends rented it until the middle of the month, but went home last week and gave it to me for free. The house is huge, but very basic. I’ve got giant screen windows that let the mosquitos in, but also let me hear and see the ocean like I’m sleeping on the sand. I fall asleep to the sounds of waves thundering against the shoreline (and millions of bugs outside chirping) every night. I’ve also got ants, cockroaches, mosquitos, and something-else-that-flies living there with me. When it rains, all the rooms get about an inch of water on the floor. It reminds me of Fight Club, only 150ft from the beach. This is my nearly unfurnished bedroom.

And here is my view from the bedroom window.

Since it is so far out of town, I rented and ATV and drive nearly off-road to and from town every day. ATV’s are fun, but in a few days I’ll be giving it back and moving out of this house and to a place closer to town. I plan to buy a small scooter in San Isidro by the weekend. Here’s my ATV.

The best part about this town is the sunset. Every night almost everyone from town lines up on the beach to watch it , and nearly every night it is different. Here’s a good one.

The worst part of this place is the creepy-crawlies. As I have said before, there are many bugs including mosquitos and roaches and other things, but imagine my surprise when this crab crawled up out of the shower drain while I was showering. Holy shit.

OK, well that’s it for now. I have uploaded a bunch more photos, so have a look. I’ll try to post new photos weekly.

that’s crazy… crabs crawling through the drain… I just got the canon 40d. and a 50mm 1.8 lens as a gift… trying to decide on whether to get the 10-20mm next or the 17-40mm. what do you think? i’ve been on your DSLR advice page a million times… looks like you really like the 10-20mm sigma.

    Redd,

I absolutely LOVE the Sigma 10-20mm as you can tell from the vast majority of the photos I choose to post on Flickr. It is a really, really fun lens, especially if you like landscapes and scenic things. I’m not sure about a 17-40mm. I have a Sigma 17-70mm and it is a fantastic replacement to the kit lens. I rarely use my Canon 70-200 anymore, except for wildlife when I travel. It’s a monster to carry around. 17-70mm is very versatile and good for all sorts of situations. I wish they made a 10-70 and then I wouldn’t have any other lenses when I travel. Good luck. I can’t wait to see some photos.

cool. thanks for the input. I’ve been on flickr checking out sample shots taken with the 10-20 sigma…. really nice… I’ll let you know as soon as I post some pics.

Not the first time you’ve had crabs in your shower, I’d bet…

Thanks, Chris! Thanks to your pics, I just had to add elephants and anteaters to my list of animals that “I can’t even believe are real”.

You better look before taking a shit!

Is that an anteater in your flickr slideshow? Some nasty looking claws on that guy. Maybe if you keep one of these insectivores in the kitchen, you’ll solve your creepy-crawly problems.
