about chrisdiclerico.com

This website is the bane of my existance, my escape, my hobby, my podium, and my public memory. I started it when I was out of work in 2001 (bursting bubble), as a way to show off my portfolio of web and multimedia projects and to try to get a job. Some short time later, I got a job and hobby blogging took over. Mostly I posted funny things I got in emails instead of maintaining a “funny mailing list” on my Lotus Notes at work. Since then, it has evolved and evolved. This is the 4th iteration, and the portfolio is gone because it had been so poorly maintained it was basically useless. It has become the hub of all my hobbies which include pixel art, photography, writing, programming, laughing, and soldering. I guess some of you like to read it, but I’ll never figure why. This site was meant for my friends, and it still is - but it’s just that now, there are thousands of you, a far cry from the original six.

Over the years, we’ve added some authors. These are all friends of mine - people I can draw pixel likenesses of, who generally have something interesting to say, when they find the time to say. They are all lazy shits to tell you the truth.

We (mostly me) write about technology, programming, politics, boobs, monkeys, little people, people hurting themselves, celebrities embarassing themselves, cars, music, NYC, LA, Dubai, TV, movies, and shit. Sometimes it’s really interesting. Other times it’s a probably boring as hell. I try not to care too much which way it goes, but increasingly my addiction to your compliments has grown, and therefore this site takes up more and more of my time.

about me

I am a professional amateur. Amateur writer, amateur technologist, amateur designer, amateur artist, amateur inventor, amateur photographer, amateur chef. Jack-of-many-trades, master-of-none. I have been a programmer, creative director, and information architect, but right now I’m in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, project managing the rebuild of the website of a major global airline. You can check out my resume if you really need to get some sleep. I like to cook, eat, drink, read, draw, take photos, click pixels, write, program websites, drone on and on about stuff nobody really cares about, and stare at cleavage. Hopefully all of this comes through on this website, and hopefully you enjoy it enough to come back every once in a while…

about the technology

This latest installment of chrisdiclerico.com uses the fantastically flexible, open-source, CMS, Wordpress. In former iterations, it used Blogger and Moveabletype. All these different systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, but I am very please so far with Wordpress. I use a bunch of different plugins to make the site do what it does, and if you care, they are all listed in the sidebar on this page.

This site is hosted by Dreamhost, which I can’t recommend more highly. I recently switched from another host, to this unbelieveable “Code Monster” plan on Dreamhost: $19.95/mo for 7.6GB of storage space, 192GB of transfer bandwidth, 15 hosted domains, 3000 email accounts, and the list goes on and on and on. If you sign up, please tell them cdiclerico sent you.

I find, edit, steal, learn code from all over the web. Scriptygoddess is one of my favorite places to find Wordpress tips and tricks. I also designed their pixel icons.

I work, almost exclusively on a G4 Powerbook running OS 10.4 using BBedit, Transmit, Photoshop, and Ecto. I experiment with some other stuff too, but nothing seems to work as well as these.

That’s about all I have to say right now.
